There are only a handful of practitioners in the world who are qualified manual therapists and singing teachers, using a multidisciplinary approach to singing training and Stephen is one of them. Stephen specialises in the area of honing in on tension, and eliminating it in his singing teaching across the UK and worldwide.
Stephen understands singers and dancers alike after he studied ballet at the Central Ballet School and then transferred to the Musical Theatre BA(hons) at Arts Educational Schools, London. After sustaining a serious knee injury (and leaving performing behind) he has coached on The Voice – Belgium, and has been a guest lecturer at UCLH London and Goldsmith’s University, as well as regularly teaching at The Urdang Academy.
As a Musical Director/Vocal Coach, Stephen has worked on some 20+ productions including Legally Blonde, Les Mis, Sister Act and Bring It On as well as resident teaching at courses across London including London Studio Centre, Read College and The Emil Dale Academy. Stephen was also the resident Musical Director for Spirit Young Performers Company. With SYPC, Stephen was creating YouTube content reaching millions of viewers each month and gained substantial recognition from Disney Records for his viral arrangement of “How Far I’ll Go”.
Stephen regularly engages in professional development and has trained with Dr Jenevora Williams and ENT Consultant Declan Costello in both vocal health, and anatomy and physiology, and is continuing his work in becoming a fully recognised, BVA approved Vocal Rehabilitation Coach.
He has trained with leading voice researcher Jeanie LoVetri (Somatic Voicework) as well as leading voice coach, Anne-Marie Speed (3+ years of Estill Voice Training). Stephen was also personally mentored by Dr Meribeth Dayme who is the prize winning researcher and author of Dynamics of The Singing Voice in her CoreSinging methodology.
In 2018, Stephen was appointed one of the seven World Voice Teachers and therefore coaches the next layer of global singing teachers in dealing with tension, vocal massage and anatomy and physiology. He is also a guest lecturer with the Modern Vocal Technique Institute where he trains singing teachers in Anatomy and Physiology.
With a quest for knowledge and understanding it is clear Stephen’s breadth of work and appreciation of vocal pedagogy only keeps expanding. These Vocal coaching sessions combining vocal and bodily manipulations to secure technique and neuro- muscular patterns ultimately secure a truly holistic, free artist.
